I have the second edition (version 2.0 --took me awhile to realise there was a version 2 and trying to patch to 1.1 was useless as per vista recommendation)

The game crashes to desktop when it trys to load the menu.

i have tried all compatibility modes and options...run as admin. I am also using admin account.

Nothing is working. This is about the only game out of 23, so far, that i have had trouble with.
(the other being moh:pa)

I've been having problems with San Andreas on Vista as well- I can get it to run by setting the compatibility to Windows 98 but because of Vista's "different" Documents folder, the game can't seem to find the user directory. So I can't save and it doesn't pick up my personal mp3's.

I am also running Second version- could it be that the first version has no problems? If so, why would that be?

If San Andreas works on your Vista, please include what version of the game you're using.

early i gave this a 1* with the comment:

"I have the second edition (version 2.0 --took me awhile to realise ..." blah blah

Well, i tried reinstalling the game to the location someone said the game requires...instead of on my f: drive.

the game works fine..without any kind of compatibility mode :)

Not sure what made the difference as the game didn't actually install where i was told to put it.
But it NOW certainly works from:

C:\user\rockstar games\gta san andreas\GTA San Andreas\

YAYA!

Stupid me- why didn't I think of that? Just reinstall the game and it'll work fine.

The new user directory on mines isn't using my windows login account's directory, but the public one. So just drop files into there and everything should work.

I'm using the original edition of San Andreas with the 32-bit Business edition of Vista, a Sapphire x800GL, 2 GB RAM and a 3.0 GHz P4.

The game starts and plays fine for the most part, however the mouse occasionally stops working and there are random crashes. The mouse is fixable by going into the menu and returning to the game, sometimes needing to be repeated. Unfortunately the game periodically hangs when entering the menu. A workaround is to try to remember how to get back to your safehouse without consulting the map which you need the menu for.

As well, I've gotten a few occasional crashes to desktop while just roaming the first city in the ten hours playing it in Vista. It's extremely problematic because you can only save your game in the one specific spot at the beginning of the game, and you often have to spend a lot of time journeying back to it.

If you have the original version, you might want to try updating it to version 1.1 with the patch if you haven't already.

I'm using the 1.1 patch. It didn't make any difference :/

I'm thinking it might be related to video drivers, since the problem is the screen blanking. Hopefully the problem will just fix itself as ATI improves Vista support...

still running on "old" Windows XP...

After starting up the game and going through credits, the game literally shuts down and the screen goes back to the desktop. I have a AMD Athlon 1200 mhz with 320 MB RAM but my 3d accelerator has only 32 MB memory.

i play it with everthing maxed up (video)

but major issue, right button doesn't seem to be working, character always walking even when you don't touch any key, to the left

and the right button only stops the character or a car, meaning you can't go to right or turn right when you r in a car

interesting problem

i got windows vista....always had the problem of the mouse glitching out like mentioned above (when i had xp) Now that problem seems to be gone,(ugraded to vista and reinstalled) but the game runs really really sluggish. Put all setting to low and i cant even get the first missions done. Sometimes the bike moves like a quarter of a block at a time and just jumps. Horible video quality. Forget tryign to turn. I have no idea whats causing this and rockstar says it my video cards fault since i dont have a dedicated card on my laptop....A lot of bull cuz my vid card runs video editng equipment fine, and thats alot more needy then games. Also it ran fine on xp in maxed out settings.

Alright. I have the second edition of San Andreas, and Windows Vista. Its runs alright, except when it does run, a bunch of random letters and numbers are constantly in the way. The game runs alright, but its practically impossible to actually focus on playing without being annoyed.

Works well in some way. At first I had a messed up screen with lots of letters on screen but fixed that by updating my graphics driver.
The mayor problem is that the game freezes occasionaly, most of the time when going into the menu or going back to the game from the menu. Also Alt-Tab increases the chance of freezing the game. I tried setting the compatibility to Windows XP but that doesn't seem to solve the problem.
I've an Intel Dual Core 3GHz, 2GB Ram and about 256MB of Video Ram.

Running the Second Edition of GTA: SA on Vista Home Premium.

Specs are a Core 2 Duo T7500, 2GB RAM and an 8600M GT.

Runs fine - but when running on anything above 1024x768 some of the color's become a bit "washed out" - i.e. the game looks really dull. But the game runs well and is playable if you can stand the 'off' colors. Most likely a graphic card driver issue though and not with Vista.

It does occasionally crash as mentioned by others. This is especially true when you go back to the menu to access the map. Mouse lockups too, but can be fixed by pausing the game then unpausing.

I have the following problems under Vista Home Premium 32bit (w/ Dual Core Intel E6600 (iirc), 2GB ram & nVidia 8800GTS graphics):

1) The mouse occasionally won't work ingame - I can't move the camera using it. I have to exit to the menu and resume.

2) Mouse buttons occasionally don't work in menus - have to mouseover and press enter.

3) Game sometimes crashes when going into the game proper.

4) When framerate limit is turned off, you are unable to move while aiming. Which is a shame, because it's bloody beautiful to watch.

I got the mouse crash issues to stop on Windows XP x64 by changing the shortcut's preferences to "Windows 98/Me" compatibility. I've read that this also fixes it on Vista:
http://pullmonkey.com/2007/4/30/how-i-got-gta-san-andreas-to-work-with-a-crappy-os-vista

Until now, the mouse buttons would stop responding when I hit Esc to view the menu. The game would often crash upon exiting the menu to resume the game. Before, I couldn't finish more than 3 unique jumps without it crashing. Now, I finished all unique jumps in the Los Santos in one go.

I find that when you install a fresh version and go to program compatibility, run it as if it's win 98/me, it works fine, however for an older game, something is taking up allot of my comp resources because the animations are jittery. Plus the graphics look a little off. Even for my comp witch has high specs.

Follow this link for instructions on how to play on vista and you can download the multiplayer patch with it too.

It works, but it has a few errors.

Sometimes, the mouse locks up, and it won't recognize there being a mouse. (both for looking around and clicking in the menu)

This can be solved by pausing and then unpausing. (Using the ENTER key to replace the mouse if neccesary)

However, if the game is paused right after loading the game, completing a mission, or the game is paused and unpaused rapidly, it happens that the screen turns black, and San Andreas will have to be turned off using the task manager and any unsaved data will be lost.

Also, it does not automatically see User Tracks. A manual User Track scan must be performed everytime the game is started up.

I am running version 1.1, from the default install directory it suggested.

Running GTA:SA v1.0 on Windows Vista Business 32-bit. The game works fine, but occasionally the mouse will stop working. This mostly seems to happen after saving the game.

Also, the game will occasionally freeze when using the menus or Alt+Tabbing out of the game.

Compatibility mode doesn't seem to have any effect.

This Game don't work on my Windows XP so good and I dont know why. When I start playing, the mouse dont work on menus and when I load the savegame, or start new game the mouse dont work always. So i cannot aim at all when I have played a minute. The second problem is: when I'm trying to fix somehow the mouse problem, like pressing ESC and moving my mouse back and forthand then pressing ESC again to return to game it will work only sometimes, when it dont work, i do it again and the game freezes and I have to shut it down pressing CRTR + ALT + DEL. The third problem is: Loading or strating a game, in few minutes the game just freezes. My Computer: Fujitsu-Siemens Scaleo H, Windows XP Mediacenter but its Professional too, nVidia GeForce 7600GS, Amd Athlon 64x2.

I've found a solution that I haven't found on any website.

There is a process called "QPService.exe" that has a conflict with GTA San Andreas. The description of this process in the task manager is "HP Quickplay Resident Program".

I found that by terminating this process and then running the game, it works perfectly.

This process comes after installing HP Quickplay on your system. HP laptops already come with it.

To get San Andreas working, hit CTRL+ALT+DEL then click "Start Task Manager" go to the "Processes" tab and look for "QPService.exe" and end it.

This fixed on my computer:

- The time it took between loading the game and showing the menu on the screen.

- The time it took to show the menu when I paused the game.

- Occasional freezing.
