Drop down menus still don't work, no patches out there.

I have recently switched over to XP from a Win 98/XP dual boot configuration I have used for many years.

My system: P4 3.0 GHz with 1.0 GB Memory and GeForce 5500 Card with 256 MB onboard.

The USAF, its Patch and its Thunderbirds Patch all installed without a hitch via the XP's Win 98 Compatibility wizard.

Intriguingly, the game can be accessed only by clicking the Thunderbirds Icon. The USAF Icons get me the message "Please insert the correct CD-ROM, select OK and restart the application." (That fix does nothing).

For USAF fans, here is the list of what PLAYS and what WON'T PLAY/HANGS.
PLAYS -- All Training Missions (4), All Thunderbirds Missions (3), All Quick Missions but only those accessible through the Random button. I cannot program my own, as I could on Win 98. The auto-loading Fly Now missions also plays okay.

The following non-games can also be opened: Pilots Record, References, Web, Multiplayers.

WON'T PLAY or FREEZES AFTER START --

Campaigns, Preferences, Mission Recorder and all Attempts at Programming a Quick Mission.

When the game freezes, the simple Ctrl-Alt-Del action gets me back to the Windows, without going through a reboot.

This lengthy symptom list for enthusiasts of the USAF, which I believe to be one of the best in its genre.

My earlier attempts to work it on XP were total failures. The only recent change in my system is the GeForce 5500 card. Has that made the difference? And if it has, why only partially?

Would appreciate helpful advice or comments.

The drop down menu issue can be fixed by right clicking on the desktop icon and setting the game to run under Windows 98 compability, and disabling visual themes.....now u can access the settings menu, the drop down menu will not work, but u can select the best graphic option, say ultra high and works fine. Hope it helps

Jane's USAF with last patch (1.02F), Pentium III 1000 @ 1050 512MB PC133 RAM Asus

Drop down menus don't work, making it impossible to configure the game to be played in any way other than with the defaults.

This is almost universal with this title, with both Win2K and WinXP. From my research, it seems to be that the problem is with a very buggy API that Electronic Arts used to create the interface--an API which was only tested with Windows 95 and Windows 98. Electronic Arts knows what the problem is and they've had years to fix it, but they haven't released a patch for this game in years.

Yes, I have tried the "compatibility tools" in Windows 2000. Instead of running in a crippled and braindamaged fashion, the game in "Windows 95 compatibility mode" or "Windows 98 compatibility mode" won't run at all. It crashes to desktop immediately after starting, or gives a "Application Error: the memory at blahblahblah could not be read" message.

I have installed the home, then the Compatibility Toolkit but the Usaf still doesn't want to work properly.

I know it is an old game, and probably most of the people won't play it anymore...

But if there are flight-sim enthusiasts out there, IT WORKS !
It is very dissapointing to see the messages saying it don't work.

Anyways, I hope you update your page with this. I have many more fixes for games your users say they don't work under win2k.

So, Install the game (I didn't patch it), and it will run except for preferences menu, which is essential.

I installed MS lates compatibility toolkit ( if questions, pls msg me, i will give out exact version or send files ), and just ran the game in win98 or win95 mode, and EVERYTHING worked fine, also the prefs menu. Only drawback: You cannot choose the resolution in the pulldown menu, but as the game is a bit older, just click on the insane resolition prefab, and then edit the things you want. I guess this game will run smooth on any machine nowadays. And it's really sweet in 1280x1024 =]
