This is the way of the universe, with organisms alive now that are stronger, better, and more efficient than those which game before, and technology that continues along the same path of constant improvement, it’s hard to see why anyone would want to go back. There is a certain gracefulness in the march forward that can cause us to forget those awkward transitions that come in-between. I mean, take a look at the Do-Do bird. Sure it was a great little bird when nothing was really bothering it and it was just allowed to sit around and be fat and flightless until it procreated and died, but it wasn’t really good at anything else. The Do-Do is one of those awkward transitions, an evolutionary crossroad that forced it into a strange mixture of the sleekness of a bird and the lazy fatness of something else entirely.

With the arrival of affordable solid-state storage technology and better methods of heat dissipation, we are moving ever closer to sleeker, quieter, and non-moving electronics. With this push towards solid state comes mobility and ruggedness which is near impossible to get with moving parts. The downside is that as of right now, the technology involved in a solid state drive is much more expensive than that which is in a traditional HDD. This means that even though we gain much in the use of a rugged and sleek solid state solution, we lose the raw storage space of a our old friend the hard drive. It is due to this that we get to have systems that are in some ways like the Do-Do bird, with the sleekness of solid state and the aging fatness of a traditional hard drive.

Cooler Master V8 GTS CPU Cooler Review @ Hardware Canucks

Typically heatsink design cycles are long, drawn out affairs and Cooler Master’s V-series is proof positive of that. Their all-new $99 V8 GTS is a mixture of old and new ideas blended together, resulting in an extremely innovative take on how a heatsink should interact with the CPU. Innovation is key here since air-based cooling solutions seem to have reached something of a plateau, without the possibility of any major advancements unless some extreme steps are taken. In designing the V8 GTS, Cooler Master may be giving us a glimpse at what the next generation of CPU cooling could look like.

The original V8 used a unique design which relied on a single fan alongside an odd combination of large and small cooling towers. This resulted in a heatsink that performed well, but its overall temperatures didn’t quite live up to most enthusiasts’ expectations. The V8 GTS is a different beast altogether since it utilizes a much larger, smarter, ‘triple’ tower design which combines the highlight elements from the V8 and V6 GT into one cooler and then added in some new technology.
