Devices running Microsoft's Windows Phone operating system are now more popular than the iPhone in Italy, as Microsoft's OS is growing rapidly in European markets, according to new research

From Neowin:
Microsoft's smartphone operating system continues to lag far behind Google's Android and Apple's iOS, though recent research has pegged Windows Phone as the fastest-growing smartphone operating system. Now a new report has corroborated those findings, even indicating Windows Phone is overtaking iOS in some areas.

According to a new research report by Kantar Worldpanel, Windows Phone devices now make up a larger portion of the smartphone market than iPhones in Italy, and one in 10 smartphones in the five major European markets (the U.K., Germany, France, Italy and Spain) now run Windows Phone. Kantar's research note states Windows Phone is making "rapid progress" in both Europe and emerging markets, such as Latin America.
