ok: "Keep getting error 7217 after install"
-that's a graphics related error. The game has failed to initialize Direct Draw surface for the main screen.
motherboard chipset: Intel 810 and 815 chips only allow 16 bit color 3D surfaces. so EAW won't work, it tries to create 3D in 8-bit color. -Need another MOBO.
Make sure you have the latest driver for your video card. NOTE- some of the very latest cards cause problems- Video cards utilizing series 6xxx chips and beyond from NVIDIA. Try drivers in the 6x.xx series?, the the 7x.xx series drivers are problematic? see full http://eaw.wikispaces.com/hardware+guide
Try reducing desktop size/resolution. Start | Settings | Control Panel | Display | Setting. Adjust Size to 640x480 or 800x600 and Color Palette to 256 color.
Try adjusting video card hardware acceleration to 'maximum'. Start | Setting | Control Panel | Display | Setting | Advanced Properties | Performance.
Run Direct X diagnostic utility, DXDIAG.EXE, in c:\Program Files\DirectX folder or subfolder.
The EAW Launchpad chaps will help you if they can! http://groups.msn.com/THEEAWLAUNCHPAD go to the 'Warroom') also

A while ago , I had upgraded my pc from Win 98 to the Win 2000 platform .
Wanted to try out these new add-ons for my old air sim European Air War
Installed my old EAW game ,guess what , wasn't compatible , so i made a search on the net and found the compatibility set-up description for the Win2000 APCOMPAT.exe program .
It worked great , the steps included here on the previous post work exactly as stated in the # 2 statement .
At that time i had a
1.0 Gig T-brid CPU
640 megs ram
Asus A7VPro motherboard
Asus 7100 64 megs AGP MX-400 videocard
Creative 5.1 platinum souncard
I could play games all i wanted .
Now i purchased a new system .
3.0 Gig AMD Athlon
1024 ram
Asus A8N-E 64 bit MotherBoard
Nvidia 6200 256 megs videocard
Audigy 2 creative soundcard .
I installed Windows 2000 on it .
System is very stable , installed ( without any errors ) my old EAW game , patched it to 1.2 and installed my APCOMPAT.exe program , and it won't work , gives me the old = " The Application failed to initialyse properly( 0x0000005). click on OK to terminate application . "
So my present assumption , is that since this old win98 game worked under my previous win2000 platform , with the APCOMPAT.exe program , ( the other pentium 3 ) , i figure that it is likely that it's a Videocard driver issue .
Hopefully i'll find a solution through my ongoing research .

Received the follow messages:
1) runs with setwin95.cmd utility
2) I have run the patch to update eaw and run the appcompat with windows 2000 selected the game does not start and I get an error message msvcrt.dll is not compatable with win32's, this site says it should run after updating eaw to version 1.2 but it still doesnt.
3) First, update EAW to Version1.2. Then install APCOMPAT.exe (it´s in a support drawer of the W2K-CD). Run APCOMPAT.exe, checkmark only NT5 as the operating system, and link (important!) AUTOPLAY.exe from the EAW-CD in the field "Start the following program". Klick OK! Then the autostart EAW screen appears. Tested under Win2K/SP1/DirectX8/Det 6.31/Using unoffical EAW 1.2a patch
4) Install the game like normal, and wait for it to give the error message at the end of the install. Replace the eaw.exe file in the install directory with the copy on the cd to get rid of the invalid win32 application message. Enjoy. Tested with SP2, latest compatibility updates, and version 1.0 of EAW.
5) Hi, i patched EAW to run under Win2k it was just suffering from detecting the O/S rather than DX version, hope some peeps find this helpful
