Needed to use Win95 compatability on the installer as it thinks there's too little disk space.
Applied the patch and added -m to the command line in the shortcut (as mentioned on the publisher's site).
Set most of the .exe files to Win95 compatability, disabled themes, and 640x480 (don't know how many need these but it was easier to do them all rather than one-at-a-time).
Finally, I needed a later version of smackw32.dll I got mine from my copy of Jagged Alliance 2 (ver 3.2h Jan '99). To find your own, see www.smacker.com for a list of games that use it - there's probably a later version somewhere in your collection.
