You *MUST* download the DC240 Full software (40MB) from the website. Even though it's marked as V1.0 (as is the shipped CD), its obviously different, and its even labeled DC240_DC280 vs just being for the DC240.
Here's what I did:
Install the DC240/DC280 V1.0 40MB image from Kodak's site.
Install the Windows 2000/USB patch from Kodak's site.
Connect and start camera, which was detected as new hardware and I was asked if I wanted to install it. I said Yes.
The explorer view to the camera was then immediately available and I could browse pictures.
I tried all combinations with the shipped CD + patch and was unable to make it work.

3) Camera works well in USB mode with Camera Software 1.0 + Windows 2000 USB Patch downloaded on Kodak web site. It don't works with the software on the Kodak installation CD-ROM.
