Got M&M7 to work in Windows XP Pro, with all the bells and whistles enabled.

--- Getting the 3D graphics accelleration to work ---

1) Download the latest Compatibility Toolkit from Microsoft (I used version 3.0).

2) Run the Compatibility Administrator Tool.

3) You should see something that says "New Database(1) " at the bottom of the list. Right-click on it, and select "Create new --> Application Fix".

4) Enter relevant information in the next dialog. Select MM7.EXE as your program file.

5) Select "None" on the next dialog.

6) Enable "Wind95VersionLie" or "Wind98VersionLie" (it doesn't matter much) on the next dialog. Nothing else.

7) Don't change anything on the last dialog.

The following steps aren't really neccesary (probably), but if you follow them you will be able to launch the game from your favourite shell instead of from the compatibility toolkit.

8) Save your new database. You'll need to put it somewhere on-disk.

9) Install your new database by selecting "Install" from the file menu.

And that's it. This method I was told about by a friend of mine. It works on at least two different computers. It's not a freak accident.

--- Getting the sound accelleration to work ---

Now, this bit I only tried for myself. My friend doesn't have an EAX capable sound card, so he couldn't test it.

10) Delete or rename MSSA3D.M3D.

That's it. The only option M&M7 has now is to use MSSEAX.M3D. I have an EAX capable sound card, and the game runs with the EAX option enabled in the configuration program. I have noticed some reverb effects in caves.

Will not run at all without enabling Compatibility mode. No visible graphical problems. Experienced problems with sound and voices stuttering and lots of static, but music plays smoothly. Solution: Sound problems seem to go away by replacing mss32.dll in the game directory with a newer version of the file.

Doesn't work in compatibility mode (win 95, 98, etc...).
Needs a 16bit resolution, and best in 640*480 (check it in the shortcut properties).
I couldn't manage to use hardware 3d mode, with my geforce card, only software mode.
On recent computers, you'll need to change the rotation to smooth (game options).
Some sound problems.

Needs 16bit Resolution.

Maybe 640*480 (change in shortcut properties).

No Direct3D hardware support.

Problems with sound (even with no accel).

With fast computers, needs to change rotation to smooth (in game options).

I don't know about anyone else with this game, but I haven't been realy able to play it since I upgraded to Win2k that first time. In Win2k you could get the game started, but if you tried to use any DirectX 3D or sound it would just crash out to the desktop. Now without at least the Direct3d stuff, the graphics in the game were really bad, ie - all spells simply looked like little spit fireballs looked exactly the same as the magic missle, etc. So I didn't play it anymore and it remained my only game on the shelf that I couldn't use with Win2k. And 3do just said that 'Windows 2000 is not a gaming OS' line when I contacted them.
Well recently I just installed Windows XP Pro on my system. So I decided to give the game another shot. Now when I started it up even in software mode it just crashed. :( Well I was like this will not do. So I was finally able to get it working again after running the WinXP Compatibility Wizard on it and setting it to either Win2k or 98. For some reason though it HAD to be done through the wizard, just setting the compatibiliey mode through the shortcut wouldn't work (weird).
So it worked again, but only 100% in software mode :(. Well I was not ready to give up on it so quickly so I download the new Application Compatibility Toolkit 2.5 from Microsoft (It's made for XP and it will for Win2000 when sp3 is released so this may work for 2k systems later). Now i was trying verious things when i came across the Application Verifier 2.19 tool. This tool's job is to run a prog looking for certain things that you tell it to and log them so you can maybe figure out where your compatiblity issues are. I added the MM7Setup.exe to the list of apps and was checking a few items. And then I found out something weird . . . just by adding the app to the list it all of a sudden let MM7 run and not only run, but run in Direct3d mode!! And it is even working without any Compatibility Modes set in on MM7Setup.exe, just simply adding it to the verifier's list and not checking any options to log causes the game to run fine. :)
