I've done everything mentioned above, but after I get the warning that this game contains violence, I hear the Windows Error "Beep" and the game freezes. After fidgeting around I see that the error message was an "Open Driver Error". I have no idea if this is sound, video, or anything else.

how to run under xpsp2:
1) install the game-full install
2) copy the cd content to your install location, overwrite if prompted
3) run regedit, find you resident evil 2 install path (C:\games\RESIDENT EVIL2\ for example)
4) change your cd patch (Install Path2) to match your install path (Install Path)
5) optional: copy no-cd fixed executables to the REGIST folder if you want to run the game without cd,overwrite if prompted
6) set all game executables (Leonp.exe,Clarep.exe,RESIDENTEVIL2.EXE) to win9x compatibility
7) run RESIDENTEVIL2.EXE,set you card to unknown and your resolution to 320*240 fullscreen if you want to run it 640*480 fullscreen (yes this is correct, when running under compatibility the settings are reversed)
8) NTFS format users: set your save game folder (Save Path in your registry, its right under those install paths you were changing earlier) to some partition with FAT formatting (usb flash drive, floppy disk)
9) run some video in media player of you choice, stop it and leave it in the background (required for the game to run at normal speed)
10) run the game using any of the executables on your hard disk
after this, the game should run fine.

HI. First, sorry bout my english, dont have much time to improve it :).
Ive seeing the problems the people have been experiencing with this title, and ive got it to work lately on my notebook following the pieces of advice scattered arround the net.
First of all, my system is a dual core pentium with a ati xpress 200m and 1024mb of ram. My SO is windows XP SP2. The game is Resident Evil 2 Platinum Edition.
Install the game to the directory C:\Resident Evil 2. Usually the game freezes a bit when you try to browse the install folder, but it works, only wait a bit. Install all options, and both claire and leon data. Dont forget to install the windows media player 6, the directX 6 and the indeo codecs. These are located on the regist folder of both CDs.
Then, open the RE2 launcher, and browse the save game directory to C:\Resident Evil 2. after that, open the properties of the launcher executable(The one that is located in the CD) and set in the compatibility tab to windows 95. then do the same with the main executables of the cd, located in a folder named regist(LeonU and ClaireU).
If you experience graphic problems, in the OPTIONS that are located in the launcher menu, set the video card to "unknown card".
And finally, before playing, open windows media player and keep it minimized. This is required fot the game to function at full speed.
There are some people that cant see the videos in windowed mode. The solution is easy, Just move a little bit the window and the video will show.
Other people tells about a glitch when, inside the unbrella installation, the game freezes when claire is talking to leon an seeing him through the camera. To bypass the glitch, try turning the screen resolution to fullscreen mode using F8, or quit the compatibility mode in the claire exe.
I get it to work, so, keep trying and good luck!
David.

I created a new Fat32 partition and installed the game in there without doing anything else, and now the games loads perfectly. I guess that Resident Evil 2 is not fully compatible with NTFS.

Setting compatibility mode to Windows 95 is not enough!
I had to set save game directory to "\RESIDENT EVIL2\" in root directory of drive. For example "C:\RESIDENT EVIL2\", "D:\RESIDENT EVIL2\" ... then loading works ... for me.
If I set save game dir to (for example) "C:\GAMES\RESIDENT EVIL2\" or "C:\RE2\" it does not work!
So, my solution is:
- Create shortcut to LeonU.exe, or ClaireU.exe
- In shortcut set compatibility mode to Windows 95
- Change save game directory to "C:\RESIDENT EVIL2\"
... and loading is now functional.

PROBLEM: Can't load Savegames
SOLUTION: 1) make shortcut to the actual game EXE (NOT the loader) on your desktop - LEONP.exe for Disk 1 / CLAIREU.EXE for Disk 2; both of which can be found on the disks' REGISTER directory.
2) Change the shortcuts to run under Windows '95 Compatibility. The savegames WILL show up (albeit with some screwy Kanji at the bottom of the screen)
3) There's a high chance you'll get the "this program has a problem and will be closed / submit/don't submit"-etc. box. Ignore this completely as the game works fine, and just close the error box after you've quit the program.

I was experienced the same problems to load a previously saved game. So I tried the solution suggested of the Windows Application Compatibility Toolkit but I couldn't find a simply way to setup the windows 95 compatibility. Instead I tried a look up for windows 95 compatibility in the Microsoft Knowledge Base and found out that the Windows 2000 SP2 and up already provides several compatibility modes but are hidden for default. They need to be unhidden first (try regsvr32 %your system directory%\apppatch\slayerui.dll). Once you enable the compatibility support create a shorcut to the game exe (claireu.exe i.e.) and use the compatibility tab to set Windows95 Support. It doesn't work if you use the shortcut to the application launcher.
