It works easily, before you install it. Even if the autorun menu pops-up, close it. Then go to Start->Run, and then browse and look for the Thief Gold CD (Installation Disc) and when you find it, right-click on the Setup icon. Then click on Properties. Click on the Compatibility Tab, and then click on Run This Program In Compatibility for: and then click on Windows 98/ME. Click on OK and run Setup, should run with no problems.

I have tried everything to get Thief Gold to work on Win XP Pro. IT WON'T
I installed using:
setup -lgsntforce
It only crashes to desktop when I try it.
Also I dnloaded the file imagecfg.zip
I put the executeable from this file in the game dir. and also made the batch file as follows and ran it to make it run on one processor.
Batch:
imagecfg -u thief.exe
imagecfg -a 0x 1 thief.exe
pause
copies of imagecfg.exe were also copied to Win/sys32 & win/sys32/dll cache
My system is Win XP Pro
Asylum FX5600 Ultra 256mb
Pentium 4 3.0ghz Northwood
1gb DDR 4000 high speed ram
Hyperthreading enabled
Asus P4C800-E Deluxe MB
I give up.... frustrated!

The Thief games nor System Shock 2 support hyper-threading under Windows XP, IOW after starting the game you will suddenly crash to desktop. You can get around this: When at the menu screen, alt-tab out of the game and launch the task manager. (You need to do this before actually starting game play.) Under the Processes tab select the Thief.exe and right click. Select 'Set Affinity...'. De-select/un-check cpu 1. Another issue with Windows XP is sound support. If you have any sound blaster card you will need to turn hardware acceleration off completely or the game will crash.
I have played Thief, Thief Gold, Thief II and System Shock 2 to completion on Windows XP using these suggestions. I actually wrote a small program to launch the games with the correct cpu affinity, but that is not necessary given the steps I outlined.
WinXP Pro
ATI Radeon 9800XT
P4 3.0ghz (hyper-threading enabled)
2 gigs of DDR Ram
Audigy 2

Works, if certain conditions are met.
You must install with 'setup -lgntforce'.
If the game crashes to desktop:
-using an Intel chipset: add 'safe_texture_manager' to 'user.cfg'
-using an NVIDIA videocard: revert to an earlier driver. 52.16 from WindowsUpdate works fine. The 45.xx drivers also work fine.
