My 1.2Ghz Athlon system running Windows XP Professional is randomly crashing several times a day. I’ve heard of a combination of the Athlon chipset, a VIA Motherboard, and a Ge Force 2 causes this problem, but I am unable to figure out anything to stop it from crashing despite the success of other people who had a similar issues.
The error message that I find in the system log is:
“
AMLI: ACPI BIOS is attempting to read from an illegal IO port address (0xcfc), which lies in the 0xcf8 - 0xcff protected address range. This could lead to system instability. Please contact your system vendor for technical assistance.
“
The actually STOP error varies, but I always get two of those messages right before the system crashes.
I’ve tried disabling ACPI in Windows XP, and setting up my pc as a “Standard PC” but it didn’t help at all. I’ve flashed my BIOS three times with various BIOS Updates but, and that fixed some problems, but my system is crashing just as often as it did before. There’s no patter to the crashes, other than it usually crashes soon after I get on it in the morning after leaving it alone all night, and rarely goes more than 20 hours without crashes, thought it will sometimes do it within 10 min…
Help!
I have a Biostar VKD7 Mobo, 256MB PC133 RAM, 1.2 Ghz 266 Bus CPU, an Inno3d GeForce 2 MX400 card, and 2 Ethernet cards.
