Hate to say this, as when it first came out I too was excited about this game, but it sucks the big one. For WWII Tank combat, Panzer Elite is much better.
I had always been a big fan of any war game from Microprose. And I saw the early demos of ATR at least a year before it was sold. It had a lot of promise. But the retail product was a major disapointment. I wanted so bad to play a Sherman Tank sim. But what you ended up with, was a game that just could not figure out what it wanted to be - a tank sim, a port of an old Avalon Hill board game, or C&C. So your only choice is Panzer Elite. It still is not what the tank window part of ATR could have been if it were THE game, but its better than anything else out there. And there is a recent retail revision of PE out now that has more goodies in it than the original I have = and they work in XP.
