2 NICs = 2X Bandwidth?

This is a discussion about 2 NICs = 2X Bandwidth? in the Windows Networking category; Hey guys, I've been pondering this for quite some time now. If I have two machines, both with 2 NICs, and have 2 crossover cat5 cables, would it be possible to effectively double the bandwidth between the two machines? I assume that this would require some additional software, but do not know of any.

I assume that this would require some additional software, but do not know of any. I would be open to most any OS, but prefer Windows 2000/XP.

Also, what, if any, bottlenecks would be present? A PCI bus bottleneck?

Thanks for your insight, everyone.
