got a question,
i went and read a bunch of topics but couldn;t find what i am about to ask,
i have 2 pc's
one win98se
the other winXP
i had win2k on the pc then upgraded to XP
i had a simple PEER to PEER network going,
after the upgrade to xp,
i can no longer see my 98pc and the 98pc can't see the xp pc
both are getting internet fine
but the network is gone...
when i went to the xp box and did the home/lan setup i gave the proper workgroup name and saw that the shares are corrrect
in the xp box the network places shows the xp's shares but not the other pc's
when i goto the 98 box i see the 98 shared hd but not the shares on the xp's
interesting thing,
when i was doing the network wizard for the xp box it aked me to make a flopy with a ntsetup.exe file which i am supposed to install on the other pc's on the network,
i made the flopy but HAVE NOT INSTALLED it on the 98 box
i have not read about this proceedure in other forums here,
do i haveto install that file on my 98 box to have the network work?
that seems like a wierd proceedure, to go and install a .exe on another pc,
my network was fine with 98 and win2k but switching to xp i get nothing
eventhough bot APPEAR to be set up correctly,
i am using netbeui protocol on my 98 box
there is no netbeui protocol on my xp box
i have left file/print sharing UNBOUND to TCP/IP on the 98 box
(is that the problem here?)
or do i for sure haveto install that file which xp made to a flopy for me?
tia

it looks like i answered my own question,
thinking about it,
winxp is using tcp/ip and i had UNBOUND file/print/shareing to it!!!
after binding it, and rebooting, i have now been able to see my xp shares on the 98 box,
yipeeee

thanks APK!
i been reading throught thoes posts in the other topics,
i don't seem to be having long wait times with browsing, not overly long anyways, and i did get it working, i ALSO haveto drop the firewall on BOHT pc's to brows the network,
ZA on the win98 box had a NETBIOS error/event when i tried to brows the xp box from the 98 box with ZA on, i turned off the ZAfirewall on the 98 box and the network was there,
and same with the XP box, i haveto drop the xpbuiltinfirewall to get the network seen (and za is off on the 98 box)
other than that anoying thing, the network "appears" to be working fine,
oh,
one more thing,
i noticed that when my dsl was out, i lost network browsing!!!!!!
go figure,
when the isp got their service back up the network was found too,
this really perplexed me!
is my network (internal traffic) going out to the isp and then back to the other recieving pc! ?????
it could also be that when the isp turned off the dsl i lost my IP so it rendered my nic's useless (duno about that one either) my isp is NOT pppOE
anyways, i am still using xp and like it!
i will say that my network was fast and stable with the win2k/98 setup,
i am thinking that m.s. will release a sp1 for xp shortly after it's official release anyways, because htere are networking issues that really need to be resolved IMO......

P.S.=> LOL! I have had that happen too... ISP goes out, RIGHT when I was working on network stuff (like trying diff. policies settings) and poof! I get all spooked & had to try to get it working thinking that one of the settings I made (usually wholesale) screwed it up! Then, finding out, my ISP is down! It's good to have a pal on the same ISP you can call to verify that... I have them, & if not TOO late? I give them a call, usually they are glad to get the call too to find out it is ISP level hassles! apk

at least it isn't just ME!!!!!!!
i am thinking that a revision for netBEUI should be incorporated
that isn't the first time i had that either! it was when i was using just TCP/IP for the win2k pc and the win98pc when the isp had internet problems so did my lan! (i am using just that simple peer to peer lan) so i havn't assigned any internal ip's to the nic's and used a third pc or use the win2k as a internet server too, or using any form of box like the linksys,
so when the isp wouldn't connect (therefore issueing you an ip to the nic) your lan got messed up,
using netbeui worked fine, even when the dsl isp was down or being serviced!
i havn't fully figured out why this happens......
and i am definitly not a good networker! networking isn't my forte'
