Yes, Glide is classed as 3DFX technology.
However as it's a non-standard API (Supported only be the 3DFX chipsets, unlike Direct3D & OpenGL) this would again mean supporting outdated and dead products.

True, outdated and dead, and if it meant a delay on any of nVidias core products, then I would say forget GLIDE. However, I've got some great old games that I'd love to play again, and software rendering doesn't really cut it.

Maybe I'll have a search round for some GLIDE emulators. There must be a couple about and with the CPU and graphics power available, they should run at reasonable frame rates.

I also have loads of cool glide only games that i want to play but i cant see it happening Also on the subject of glide wrappers, i have tried loads of them trying to get glide games working, but they all seem to be made with ultrahle in mind, so they may work fine with that but i have yet to get 1 single game running correctly

If anyone has any success with wrappers can you let me know pls

newegg.com has a leadtek GF2MX200 w/ TV out for 52 shipped.

There's your upgrade--it surpasses the Voodoo3s..and probably the 4 and 5 with new drivers(+ TV-out).

I'd like to see legacy support for the cards, just enough to make them work in XP...but oh well. Let's remember the cards in their glory and retire them ceremoniously. Let them die gracefully.

Or, run it on a Linux box! Linux has had FANTASTIC drivers for 3dfx's Voodoo 3. It's still got some strength in there.

MX200 suck! I don't care if it's got TV-out or not, it's just not a good deal. It has a 64-bit data bus, half of what the MX and MX400 have. I have one as a temp, and I can't tell a difference between and MX200 and a Voodoo 3 3000 AGP. 3dmark2000 has slightly higher marks, but that's the only way I can tell it's any faster.

Your best bet for price/performance is a GeForce2 Pro 64MB DDR. Last time I checked Newegg, MSI's 8831 was running $135USD + shipping. With the shipping saver @ $10, you've got a card that is a step below an GF2 Ultra and GF3's (in certain cases).
That's what I'd suggest, especially with local retailers asking more for GTS and MX400's. Not to say these 2 are bad, and I do understand why it costs more locally, but this is an excellent deal. The only Pro cards around here are PNY's Verto's @ $200 with no extra features.
The MSI card has S-Video out at least.

OK Guys, what do you recommend us voodoo chumps to buy instead ? Someone suggested Geforce MX 's but we might as well buy something good ! I know the GeForce3 is good but is it worth the money over say a cheaper GeForce 2 Ultra or what ? Opinions ?

The MX is a fine performaing card (the standard and 400s anyway) It would definatley be an upgrade from a Voodoo3, and with the new drivers, newer 3dfx chipsets as well. You can also find other GeForce 2 models at good prices with a bit of searching.

SHS was saying something about the V5 XP drivers basically being a crock.

I'll second M4's suggestion with the GF2 Pro. $150 or less online, and it's a step below the GF2 Ultra and GF3 levels in most cases--DX8 is a major exception.

Hi all, I read this post and I had to join this forum just to reply, so that should show how strongly I feel about this.

As Brian has already explained. 3DFX is GONE!!!

Did you get that, GONE!!! THE COMPANY IS NO MORE

IT HAS MOVED ON AND MET IT'S MAKER

IT IS BEREFT OF LIFE

IT IS AN "EX" COMPANY.

NVIDIA is not responsible for all the legions of morons that bought the last batch of 3DFX Products, anybody who paid attention to the industry, games, etc saw the writing on the wall long before 3DFX went out of business. The only people you should be crying to should be the Former CEO's and executives at 3DFX. They are the people who abandoned you to video cards that will no longer be supported in future operating systems. Not NVIDIA, I for one do not want NVIDIA Spending any time on 3DFX Drivers, and I own a good number of 3DFX Cards (of course I don't use them for my primary machines and I don't intend to install XP on any machine that runs them).

Let me explain something as well, I was the poster child for 3DFX back in the day when they had a product that held a candle up to anything that NVIDIA was making, it took a while for me to get off of that train (which was heading for a station with no people without any breaks, i might add).

But I had every 3DFX Card right up to the Voodoo 3500 TV.

Then I was able to see the light, the 32Bit Color light. Up until Quake 3, nothing really showed off 32 Bit color and the huge difference it made in games.

You guys remember what 3DFX said when people started buying Riva TNT2's with 32 Bit color.

IT read a little like this (in tone)

"Our customers dont really want 32 Bit color, they want blah blah blah, and for those that are asking for 32 Bit color, well they really don't know what they are talking about, our 16 bit, blah blah technical jargon, blah, makes it almost impossible to tell the difference between 16 and 32Bit color. (insert suspect jpeg files showing 3 different pictures)

You get the drift. They did that for almost a year. Well, I said f(#)*(# that, and bought my first Nvidia product, the Geforce (original) Creative 3D Blaster.

I haven't regretted my decision once. Now I understand not everybody can afford the best cards out there, but you know what. There are plenty of good Nvidia cards that are faster than what I bought the first time, and are definitely faster than ANYTHING!, 3DFX released during it's last year.

Point is people, grow up, move on, save up and get a new video card. Keep your 3DFX Cards, put them in a secondary system and you can still play all 12 of the glide only games that you have in your library.

It's done, get over it. I have, so have many other 3DFX users.

Later

TimT

PS. Don't even think of flaming me because I may seem like an unloyal 3DFX user, cause it aint true, I gave them every chance to do the right thing. They chose unwisely and they went out of business because of it. FAST AND HARD...
