a cd just shattered to pieces in my cdplayer
I recently got my pc formatted, and got a new cdplayer installed by a TECHNICIAN the same day. And the same night i popped in a few cds to install stuff here and there, and suddenly i put in this cd (webcam installation cd) and was somewhat quite scratched all over.

and for a few seconds the computer froze, then POW! is what i heard...
i opened the cd tray, and there my cd was, shattered to pieces.
Now what i want to know is what could have done this? is my cd player not installed properly? is it the cd? ...
now i can't CLOSE the cd tray, because of all the pieces of the cd blocking the way interiorly.
Could it be my lens is broken too?

Most likely that CD, since it had some scratches, may also have been faulty in that the material used to make that CD was not up to par or just plain inferior.
I've heard that if you can spin a disc in an optical drive fast enough it will fly apart, I've never had this happen so I can't attest to it.
I would also say that most likely your optical drive is now toast as well. See if the place of purchase will exchange it for a new one. These drives are pretty cheap now a days so the cost should not have been too much either

Yes, jmmijo is right, if a CD spins fast enough it flies apart, I've seen this lots of times. The reason for this is because the fastest a CD can spin (according to tests and all) is MAX 60x, and this is the best of the best, that is why you dont get CD-ROM's faster than 52x. If a CD has a deep scratch it means that the CD is off balance and spinning at 52x cou spell disaster (not always, but it happens).
Out of all of the CD-ROM's I've seen this happen about 70 - 80% of them was toast, the rest just needed a very good cleaning and it worked again (not worth the trouble and time if you can rather get it replaced or buy a new one).

Yep it sure seems that if a CD drive doesn't know whats in it (i.e. it cannot read from the disc) it goes into warp speed!!
If theres bits stuck in there you'll have to dismantle the whole thing and pick the bits out
My mate had this happen to him and he sucked up the lens with the vacuum!! I'd go for a new drive (they're not too pricey after all)
