Hello, name's Terry, I am running on Windows 98.
For some reason, when I come to play a certain game, my computer totally freezes up when I'm actually starting to play the game. Example, "Rune". The menu is fine, everything seems okay, but when I come to join a multiplayer game, my computer just freezes up, leaving me no choice but to reboot it with the reset button. It does this also with "Soldat", a free 2D side scroller shooter online, which shouldn't be hard to run on any computer. Same story here. Setup and menu are fine, but when I come to join someone's game or just play single player, my computer freezes up again.
I thought maybe it was my DirectX version, but it isn't, because it's obviously up to date. I tried doing a virus scan, didn't do the trick either.
Any help would be HIGHLY appreciated.

Do you have firewall enabled? Have you tried to add the game executable to firewall allowed programs or similiar list?
