Alcatel USB SpeedTouch problems
I've just had ADSL installed at home (yeah!!), but I'm having problems with the Alcatel USB Speedtouch. . . Everything works fine for about the first 10meg of data downloaded (doesn't matter the source - websites, ftp, anything) and then the modem just hangs.
I've just had ADSL installed at home (yeah!!), but I'm having problems with the Alcatel USB Speedtouch...
Everything works fine for about the first 10meg of data downloaded (doesn't matter the source - websites, ftp, anything) and then the modem just hangs. If I try to disconnect, nothing happens, and when I try to shutdown, windows has a problem shutting down "Taskbar Connections" - I end task, shutdown carries on normally but then hangs on the "Saving Windows Settings" box. Nothing else happens, and I have no choice but to kick the reset button.
Does anybody else have this problem, or is it just me?
I'd love to be able to go out and get another ADSL modem, but this being the UK, we're not allowed to
Hoping somebody can help before I go mad,
AndyF

Well as a starter you can go out and buy a new DSL modem. You have the freedom of choosing even SDSL but they cost GBP£800 upwards
This is the first time i hear of this problem being honest but it seems like you might be having trouble with your usb HW or SW. What is your config? If your chipset is VIA, then that is the trouble some models and drivers are wreaking havoc on w2k (for the USB root)

I have the same modem... i built a PC using an ABIT MOBO...and the USB never seemed to work right , even with the patches...
I now have an ASUS and it runs sweet...
I dont think its the modem ...
http://www.usbman.com is a good site for sorting USB problems

Could you be kind enough to PM me your private adress so i can come and discuss your reply "face to face" before shoving it up to where sun never shines...
I suggest you read his message and look up sarcasm in the dictionary (you can find one in librarys etc.).
He was saying he can not go out and buy one, I know that. I was just stating even if he could how much it would cost.
And also if you were clever enough to read it in full I have told him it is a problem with via chipset and USB (which i presumed he has). And did not offer any solution beyond that because he did not reply.
PS. I suggest you watch your language in the future since being banned from this forum would be the least of your problems if you do not.

Thanks for the help - I was thinking that it was a USB problem. I haven't responded before now cos I've been on holiday.
I read somewhere that the Alcatel modem, despite the fact that it's supposed to be USB compliant, occasionally draws more power than it's supposed to, and so gets shut down by the system...I tried putting the modem onto my USB hub, but still get problems.
I've had no problems with USB until now (and yes, I do have a VIA chipset).
I've tried reinstalling the drivers, even downloaded the versions from Alcatel's website, but still having problems.
I might try up[censored] to the latest VIA 4-in-1s and see if that makes a difference?
Thanks
AndyF

I've found some info on this site - for anyone who wants to know anything about ADSL in the UK, I can highly recommend it!

[size:18]I’ve heard that VIA motherboards dont work with the USB modem?
The VIA chipsets used in a number of motherboards have exhibited problems with the Alcatel modem and a number of fixes have been known to work. The list is
(a) Try newer drivers Current drivers on website are the same as on the install CD?
(Will try that
(d) Turn off assign IRQ to USB Will try that
(e) Download the latest BIOS upgrade for your motherboard (it's reported that upgrading to the ZT bios can help) Will try that
(e) Install latest 4 in 1 drivers Will try that
(f) Change USB port used, if you have 4 ports try all four Have tried that
(g) Add a powered USB hub and plug the modem into this Have tried that
(h) remove other USB devices from the PC Have tried that
(i) Use an additional PCI-USB adapter card that does not have a VIA chipset, Belkin and Lucent cards have been found to work well. Don't really want to go through that hassle
I'll let you know how I get on.

I wish you best of the luck buddy! One of my customers have a problem it is an HP K80 connected via USB on a Via chipset board.
Nothing I did helped I wish you will have better luck.
As you have tryed and reached the same conclusion it is not power Otherwise it wouldn't work at all. or the modem would shut down as you have read. does it? I thought it was disconnecting you. I have Alcatel as well mine is SDSL but I had ADSL before. both of them works fine i did not connect them through hub or such. And quite frankly i have nott seen any problems related DSL modems.
Whatever. let us know what you get.

Just to update you - I installed the latest 4-in-1 drivers, and everything is working fine now - ADSL has been up for an hour now with no probs.
What gave me the clue was that the modem was working perfectly under both Linux and XP, so the problem could only be caused by something in Win2k. According to the troubleshooting list, the only non-hardware problem was the 4-in-1s.
Anyway, I'm now happily surfing - thanks for your help Uykucu.

Actually you helped me as well...
On Friday Turkish Embassy had DSL installed upon my recommendation. on a p2p 100 Mbit network.
All the new machines and the one they are using as server are HP Brio's with guess what, Via chipset.
It worked fine after I have upgraded the chipset as well.
I wish you happy surfing.
