ATI Graphics Card Problem
I got a ati 9600 and a 9550 my games wont detect the memory and thus directX dosesn't work or Opengl I didn't know that untill I tried to play AOE3 TRIAL which told me I got 0mb of memory on my graphics card, and then sometimes my comp will just show the error blue screen and it happens at least once a day.

My 9550 will acutally play BUT for only a few seconds and then it just crashes the comp or just the game.
Their all updated and I still can't get them to work properly.
My system/display properties show them they have 256mb and yet the game says they got 0mb, and yes I reinstalled them.
So how do I fix it?

Having never used an ATI card myself, my wife's was a nightmare, I just tossed it and bought her an nVidia card, I suggest looking for your ATI/Catalyst driver in "Add/Remove Programs" in the control panel.
If it's not in there, right click my computer, then click Properties/Hardware/Device Manager. Double-click "display adapters", then click driver/"your ATI card". Next click driver/uninstall. Reboot, and then install the new driver for your vidcard.
I'm not sure if ATI drivers are the same as nVidia, but I do not allow Windoze to install my drivers, I cancel Windoze attempt to install them, and install them from the exe file that the drivers come with.

You do have a driver problem. The main problem is that your previous drivers were not entirely deleted. Go here: http://www.driverheaven.net/#news76417 and download driver cleaner. You will need to go into Windows in Safe Mode, then run driver cleaner to take out all the bits that are embedded in your system. Once you do that, it will want to reboot. If it doesn't want to reboot, reboot anyway. When your system comes back up, do not let windows install new drivers because it should tell you it has found new hardware. Use the CD that came with your card, or get the newest drivers from ATI.
I'm having trouble with my Radeon 9600 too. I only started having problems with it when I upgraded the driver to try to fix what turned out to be an audio driver problem with Dragonshard. Since up[censored] the driver, it just keeps crashing during other games that were working fine before.
I've done the manual removal of ATI files after uninstallation that they recommend at the ATI site, and I've used Driver Cleaner Pro (following it's instructions to the letter) and it makes no difference to the problem. Every driver on my machine is up to date, including the motherboard BIOS.
The oldest catalyst driver I've been able to find is 5.8. Anyone know of any sites that have older versions?

Bookmark this site, it has the oldest to the newest drivers, comes in very handy. Glad you got yourself fixed up.

I know one of these works with XP, I've used it myself, I just forget which one it is. Make sure you run these programs in safe mode. Even if it says it's not compatible with XP, try them out.
ONE of them definitely works, that's a fact.
