I just installed Windows ME, and I have a cable modem (BTW). That Auto Update is driving me nuts! Every two seconds, it says that I have to update, but when I click the icon, all I get is a wizard that makes me agree to a license agreement, and then it tells me that it will connect every so often to check for updates, and then I click finish. Nothing is downloaded. Then, two seconds later, the same thing. Over and Over again. I've tried to turn the auto update off in the control panel, but I still get the same thing. Also, the real Windows Update Site isn't even working. When I click on the site to search for updates, I get an error. Help!

What's weird, is that I don't have a Windows Update folder anywhere on my drives. I have Win ME on C: and most of my programs on E: (I have a 20 gig HD, I didn't want to have to wait to scandisk and defrag that thing). I did go into "Internet Connection Wizard" and turned off "automatic proxy detection" since I don't have a proxy server on my cable modem. The AU icon has disappeared, but I'm wondering if it's even working at all now. Also, I downloaded a Virtual Machine Update since it said that that may be the problem (from the site above).

OK...my bad. I forgot that I had System and Hidden files still hidden. There is a Windows Update folder, but the file wuhistv3.log that I'm sopposed to delete isn't even there. Do I clear the whole folder? Or, do you think I should do a reinstall of Windows ME?

Well, I haven't figured anything else out yet, but the thing hasn't been back since. But, I would like to get my PC up to date. Also, the Windows Update website still won't work. I keep getting script errors. It says that it can run or install ident.cab. I've tried to do everything they say on the site, but nothing works.
