Sounds like behavior of spyware/virus.
Open regedit, go to HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon.
In the right hand pane, locate the string value for Shell, is it set to explorer.exe?

yes , its set to explorer.exe
and guess what
i manage to delete the file in the registry then i reboot my system.
it reboots normal , no more blank desktop ,
and my harddisk was making quite some noise , like some processes is going on ,, so once the sound has stopped
i check my registry , via Startup Control Panel v2.8
and there is a new file there 8r6mno.exe
C:\WINNT\system32\8r6mno.exe
no more the previous file ,, its morphing ,
i tried scanning for virus , no virus ,
i tried scanning for spyware/adware/trojan ,
trust me , i tried all known softwares , !
, sux arghhh

it makes multiple copies of itself in your PC
in c:\winnt
c:\winnt\system32
and everywhere else ,
delete all the registry of weird file names .
and it is ok for now

I just ran into this problem today at a client. They had spyware and viruses all over the place but I thought I got everything. So I started installing Windows Updates (security updates) when IE crashed and I had to reboot the PC. When I rebooted I was faced with a completely blank desktop.
I was able to CTRL-ALT-DELETE to run any and all programs but McAfee/AdAware/Spybot picked up nothing. I am going to try and run this "Autoruns" program I read about in this thread and see if I can find the malicious files causing this problem. It worked on my PC and fortunately nothing malignant came up.
And I couldn't agree more with a previous post about why people create this code. They could be earning a great living writing code like this to help users, instead they write it to bring systems down. Doesn't make much sense. But if anyone has run into this problem again please post and let me know if there are any easier solutions to this problem.
Any advice would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
