Have you looked through the Event Viewer (Control Panel -> Adminisatrative Tools)?
Especially if you have a Via chipset...
Did you do a clean install?
no i did not do a clean install it was an upgrade over win2000 and it worked fine i'm starting to think it's my video card(voodoo3) i'm going to uninsall it and use the crappy on board to see if that fixes it
thanks guys

ok i did a clean install with no voodoo card and it still happens, and there is nothing in the event veiwer, i'm at a loss here does any one think it could be a hardware conflict that would cause it? maybe ? i'm going to check the i/o's and irq's and memory addys more update to come thanks guys
