CD and DVD drives missing

Woke up this morning and found my CD and DVD drives missing from My Computer folder. Device manager shows an (!) with a code 31 for each. Have uninstalled and reinstalled both drives, also controllers.

Optical drives are still not working.

I remember i had this problem when i first installed win2k on my system 2 years ago. I couldn't find a solution so i re-installed. Don't take my advice for granted of course because there might be other users here that know the problem and will give you a solution.
 
Have you got SP2 and other updates installed?

Cannot reinstall without CD drive

If you have a bootable CD you can. The problem is in windows environment isn't it?Just boot up and choose repair.
Or the final choise is installing a fresh copy(format).

Couldn't reply sooner. Had to complete a report.
