CD-ROM Problems
I wonder if you can help. . . I run a Toshiba Sat Pro 4600 with 256MB ram. I have a TEAC 224e internal CD ROm and an external Freecom CDRW via USB. I 'ran' Roxio CD Creator (Version 5. 2. x) and Win2000 (Version 5.

I run a Toshiba Sat Pro 4600 with 256MB ram. I have a TEAC 224e internal CD ROm and an external Freecom CDRW via USB.
I 'ran' Roxio CD Creator (Version 5.2.x) and Win2000 (Version 5.0 (Build 2195: Service Pack 1).
All was well until a hard disc failure required a full re-install (happy days!).
Since then the CDRW (drive E) works fine but although I can 'see' the internal CD (drive D) I can't 'see' or access the files therin (data or audio) via any applications.
I've uninstalled and installed both the D and E drive a few times and reinstalled Roxio a couple of times.
Any ideas?
Thanks
Mark

Did you use the internal drive to install Windows 2000. If not see if the drive will boot. That should help to find out if the drive itself is faulty
Yes, I used the internal cd to install.
Interstingly, I have managed to get the drive to work once after reinstalling Roxio but as soon as I rebooted it stopped working again.
Thanks
Mark

Try Nero. From what I hear Roxio isn't that great.
You most likely need to install an updated ASPI layer, it sounds like the version of Easy CD Creator you have is probably an OEM copy, with a custom ASPI layer. I would go to Adaptec's web site and download theirs, it's freeware. As far as I remember, the latest version is 4.71, so you may want to look for that.

Personally, I agree, but I think both programs will do what is required of them. If the original poster bought Easy CD Creator (Ie, not oem bundled) then they are probably not too keen on spending another $50-$70 for Nero Burning ROM...

Thanks for your interest.
I've downloaded and installed the ASPI layer from Adaptec and uninstalled/reinstalled Roxio. I also uninstalled Media Jukebox which was running.
BUT when I rebooted I got the bluescreen. It flashed thru' quickly before rebooting but I could make out reference to a 'physical memory dump'. At reboot Scandisk ran and made reference to 'Softwarelog.sys' misreporting it's size before claiming to have fixed the problem. However, at each reboot the process repeated.
I did restart OK in safe mode and uninstalled Roxio from there before a successful reboot in normal mode.
Any ideas?
The copy of Roxio I have came with the external drive but I'm not too precious about using it if I have an alternative. I did use Media Jukebox as a burner for a while and that seemed OK.
Thanks

Sorry to say the drive is still not working although I did notice the little yello light on the drive stays on all the time.
Do you have any further thoughts?

Two things to try, depending on how much time you have, and if your data is backed up. First, I would try another ASPI layer, perhaps LSI Logic's. Second, try reinstalling your OS.
Thanks for your feedback
I couldn't get on to Logic LSI's site to download but downloaded ForceASPI which seems to have installed all the appropriate bits and pieces (Aspichk tells me its all loaded and running properly).
BUT I still can't access the damn cd-rom.
Any ideas other than a Win2000 reinstall?
Forgive my ignorance but can I reinstall Win without losing all my data and applications?
I would back up my data of course.
Thanks
