Civilization 2 problem
This is a discussion about Civilization 2 problem in the Windows Games category; Can't manage to get Civilization 2 to play multiplayer on a WinXP and Win95 system. Both computers see eachother and can transfer files back and forth, and both play the Age of Empires 2 demo in multiplayer just fine.
Can't manage to get Civilization 2 to play multiplayer on a WinXP and Win95 system. Both computers see eachother and can transfer files back and forth, and both play the Age of Empires 2 demo in multiplayer just fine. The XP system will get the multiplayer game ready, and the 95 system will see the game, but upon trying to connect to the game on the 95 system, a box comes up that says something to the effect of "unable to join/connect yadda yadda ya."
Both games have been patched to the latest version. The XP machine is running DX9.0b and the 95 is running DX8.0a. The result was the same when attempting to run the XP game in 95 compatibility (shortcut) mode. Might QFixApp help out? I haven't needed to use it to network a game that ran fine by itself yet.

are you running the internal WinXP firewall? if so try turning it off.

Excellent suggestion. Unfortuately, the box was unchecked.
Any other ideas?
FTR, the last patch was released 4/15/99 if that helps at all.

Microsoft does not provide any support for Windows 95 anymore. I have never heard of anybody trying to network XP and 95 before though, try setting up IPX prtotcol to use instead of TCP. That said, the DirectPlay drivers might not be compatible but i doubt that. Make sure you have the critical update for Windows 95 networking - every 95 machine needs it to network with 98 or later. I think it's called "Winsock update" or maybe Winsock2.
Hope i have helped.
