Why use a switch instead of a hub? They both do the same thing, and a hub is cheaper right? Wrong! Hubs and Switches are very different. I guess the easiest way to explain the differences would be, If you had a 4 or 6 port hub running at say 100Mb/s all those ports would share the same bandwidth but with a switch allows all the ports to have a full 100Mb/s of bandwidth. It is much more economical to use a switch on any network with more than 6 computers, as you can guess 6 computers sharing 100Mb/s can get very slow.
