CPU constantly restarts, and abruptly becomes okay !
I have a Intel P4 2. 4 Ghz, Asus 533 motherboard with a GEForce 4 MMX Video Card. Although I dont think this problem is video card related, just an idea as to the system. The computer out of the blue just starts restarting on its own.

The computer out of the blue just starts restarting on its own. At first it restarts and then goes upto the windows main screen or even starts completely and then restarts after a minute or two and gradually, the time between restarts decreases to the point where I just have to start up and it keeps restarting on its own without even displaying anything to the screen, now even the boot load up.
Can this be a power supply fault ? Or the motherboard is at fault ? After a while of just leaving the computer as is, the computer starts and works normal on its own, which gives me a problem taking it to somebody and explaining the fault. Cuz its working perfect.

this problem might be heat related.
right after it restarts put your finger on the bottom of your CPU heatsink.
if its really hot and you actually feel its very hot then there is your problem.
And also motherboards have a history in malfunctioning. specially the motherboard chip the motherboard North-bridge..
if your motherboard dont have passive cooling (they rarely have anymore, youll have fans on the mobo chip.
check if it still works when your computers on.
ive had two motherboards myself where the north-bridge fan have stopped working.
you better pray its not your PSU (power supply unit), because it is a risk that if that goes, eveything directly connected to it can be ruined. this is specially the case for your , slot ins card like graphic, sound, ethernet and so on.
it might also be a software problem though, but i would check the heating first.
