100% cpu utilization when using the search feature in XP

This is a discussion about 100% cpu utilization when using the search feature in XP in the Windows Software category; when i try to search for a file on my computer i get 100% cpu utilization and my computer hangs. only when i stop the search the cpu utilization returnes to normal. i'v disabled the animation and turned on the indexing.

but the problem remains .

PIII 550
512 RAM
30 GB HD

Try unregistering the .ZIP folder's.

try turning on dma instead of pio, through devicemanager -> ide channels

Yes, it sounds like DMA to me.
