100% cpu utilization when using the search feature in XP

when i try to search for a file on my computer i get 100% cpu utilization and my computer hangs. only when i stop the search the cpu utilization returnes to normal. i'v disabled the animation and turned on the indexing.

512 RAM
30 GB HD

Try unregistering the .ZIP folder's.

try turning on dma instead of pio, through devicemanager -> ide channels

Yes, it sounds like DMA to me.
