try disabling all backgroud processes, especially virus scanners when doing a defrag.

OP
i had som damage to the disk, i did a chkntfs and a chkdsk and it worked out fine
I was having the same "lost engine connection" trying to run defrag. I ran chkntfs and it fixed my prob. Thanks!
I have the same problem but Im not sure what to do with chkntfs, please advice!
Ive tried to just type 'chkntfs C:' but it just says C: isnt dirty.
What to do?
