Descent 3 - horrible performance

T-Bird 800 256MB PC133 RAM W2k Pro w/ SP1 Geforce 2 GTS SB Live Value Descent 3 hovers around 30-50fps and stutters wildly in some places, which is odd cuz I can get twice the FPS on my P2 333/V3 3000.

wild guess have you installed the latest VIA 4 in 1 drivers? The 6.34 detonators (6.27) work just as well. Is fast write DISABLED on the via agp setup?

I haven't run any benchmarks on D3, but I have had perfectly acceptable performance out of it under Windows 2000 (pre SP1 - haven't played it for months).

Make sure you have the latest patches for D3 as well as those for your video card.

Descent3 is based on Quake2 engine if I remember.
Have you the right .dll in the game's directory?
Q2 engine likes to have the opengl32.dll at hand.

Descent3 is not on the quake2 engine, Outrage used their own Fusion Engine...

The only time I have this problem with Descent 3 running under Windows 2000 is when I enable the proprietary 3D sound interfaces in the Descent 3 launcher.
Specifically the problem occurs when I try to use EAX with SoundBlaster Live sound cards or A3D with Aureal sound cards.
If I just enable DirectSound 3D in the Descent 3 launcher everything works smoothly.
