I have some display problems with a few games after I migrated from Windows 98 to Windows 2000. I did not have those problems when I was running the same games under Windows 98.

The problem appears with the following games:

* Disney's Tarzan - Action Game
* Need For Speed 5: Porsche Unleashed

DESCRIPTION OF THE PROBLEM

When running either game, I have 2 horizontal black bars, about 1/2 inch each, one near the top of the screen, one near the bottom. Also, what is displayed above the top bar almost at the top of the screen is repeated at the bottom. In addition, with NFS, sections of the screen flicker. Nothing that I can do with the set-up options or anything else would solve my pb.

MY CONFIGURATION

Intel SE440BX - Pentium 3 / 450MHz
128MB RAM
10GB HDD
Samsung CD-R 40x
Iomega CD-RW 24x-10x-40x
Hercules 3D Prophet II MX (with the latest drivers: v.21.81)
Turtle Beach Santa Cruz
Windows 2000 Professional (v.5.0, build 2195)
DirectX 8.1 (all diagnostic tests are successful)
Refresh rate of my screen at 1024x768: 60Hz (cannot be changed)

I apologize for my lengthy posting. I do not know if my problem is common, but I have browsed through the threads on this Forum and also through the FAQ, and I cannot find any description of a similar problem.

Can someone possibly help?

Hercules 3D Prophet II MX (with the latest drivers: v.21.81)While these are the latest drivers from Hercules, nvidia has newer ones. Have you tried the 23.11 reference drivers from nvidia's site?

CUViper: No, I haven't tried the latest drivers from Nvidia. I tend to use those from the h/w device manufacturer. But I can give it a try...

That's what I would try - you can always go back to the manufacturer drivers if the problem doesn't go away....

Thanks for your advice, CuViper!

I have installed the latest Nvidia drivers (v.23.11) as you suggested. unfortunately, it does not make any difference at all: the pb remains.

I have also tried to change the refresh rate, using the nvreffix utility, to any possible value, but all in vain!

I am just wondering what I could do now...

Does it happen at all resolutions? If not, you may just have to settle with running at a lower resolution...

CUViper: yes, it does happen at all resolutions, and I have tried to change them. But I think that either game runs at 640x480 anyway, whatever resolution you choose...

Does your system pass the DirectDraw and Direct3D tests? Run 'dxdiag', go to the display tab, and see what happens when you run the tests...

I have the same problem with half-life, cs retail etc.
I have an radeon 8500 with the newest drivers and refreshfix.
my desktop resolution is 1280x1024 at 85hz and Im using OGL 1280x960 in half-life. when I start either cs or half-life (same anyway), I get also 2 vertical lines about an inch high. the one on top is black and the other one on the bottom is my taskbar as a ghost image(tho I cant click on it of course). the game runs very well besides this problem and I wouldnt mind if the 2 bars were both black... but its really annoying to have a grey taskbar at the bottom all the time...
also, when I press esc in-game it normaly changes the resolution to 640x480 for the menu. it does that but when I switch back to the game it will stay in 640x480 but the game resolution is still at 1280x960 and I will only see the lower left 1/4 of the normal 1280x960 screen in an 640x480 res.
is there maybe a command for the ini file so that I could use an ingame resolution of 1280x1024 instead of 1280x960?
