Do I need to update chipset Sis656 for USB 2.0?

Hello, I am running Windows98 (not Win98se). 512 Sdram, Intel CeIeron 4A, 2000 MHz, SiS 645 MoBo Chipset, Bios type-AMI (02/18/02) 30 Gig HD. I purchased this STOR USB 2. 0 12 in 1 (QMRU2121) yesterday thinking as it states on the package, it would support WINDOWS98/ME/2000/XP/MAC8.

Hello,
I am running Windows98 (not Win98se). 512 Sdram, Intel CeIeron 4A, 2000 MHz, SiS 645 MoBo Chipset, Bios type-AMI (02/18/02) 30 Gig HD.

I purchased this STOR USB 2.0 12 in 1 (QMRU2121) yesterday thinking as it states on the package, it would support WINDOWS98/ME/2000/XP/MAC8.6.
I closed all the App. programs running in the background except what I needed. Inserted the install CD,I heard it running or spinning, but nothing came up on the screen. So I then went to Windows Explorer, clicked on the CD in the rom drive, 12 -in one, then WIN98,then it told me I needed to upgrade my operating system to WIN98SE.
I have a COMPACT FLASH card and a MEMORY STICK that I would like to use this card reader for.
I have a Canon G6 Camera that the Win98 does not support the Canon software,so I wanted to make this work with the card reader instead.
On my CPU tower, I only had two USB ports for 1) Printer and 2) Scanner, and did not want to keep unplugging these USB plugs back and fourth,Soooooo I bought a PCI to USB 4-port card which I installed, and thought I could just plug in the camera to any of these open USB ports, but it never read the drive (to tranfser pictures to puter) So I bought this card reader, hoping that will end my problems.

From what I hear, just because I installed a 2.0 pci to Usb card on the MoBo,and because i bought the 2.0 Multi 12-1 Card reader,it doesn't mean that Win98 will work with it,even though these two devices state that they DO work in Windows 98. The Card reader manufacturer told me it would work in Win98Se....(why do they print OS Win98/Me/2000/XP on the box?) No mention of Win98 SE anywhere.

If I do need to update the Sis645 Chipset to enable USB support, will this be hard to do?
Thanks.

Well because you are using Win 98, you may not be able to find a USB2 device driver, even from SiS's website

However, try their site just to make sure. Go to the downloads section and look for that chipset and all the drivers available for Win 98.

Knowing Microsoft, they will not be producing an updated driver for what they now call a legacy OS

Another alternative is to purchase a third-party USB2 card, they almost always have driver support for Win 98

Hey All,
Well Thanks for all your help. What seems to be a logical thought is that Windows98 should support USB v 1.1,and Win98SE shpuld support USB 2.0.
I did download the (Generic USB Card Reader Driver) from the Card Reader manufacturers website (The CD was corrupt) and was able to install the USB 1.1 version. All I needed it for was to transfer pictures from the Compact Flash card to Computer, and you know, it was just fast enough. I almost gave up on Windows98,but I found that I seldom have problems with this O.S.

I also thought, and it might still be an important thought, that even as stable as this O.S. is for me, I'm not exactly getting all the redeeming features/effects with my PCI Soundblaster Live and My AGP Nvidia MX 440 GeForce4 Cards as I would with XP. Every other day I hear about these O.S.'s Crashing.

When I was at the ELITEGROUP Computer Systems (ECS) website trying to find an upgrade to my Bios Supersocket 478,M930LR Ver.1.0..all I saw was series of numbers but nothing correlating to my MoBo.......I did see a graphics driver....Does this mean I still have to update my graphics driver even though I already have a Video Adapter like MX 440 Geforce? Is this something on the Motherboard that controls the adapter?

Up[censored] the Bios...I have heard this is easy, others have told me that if I don't know whT i'm doing, I could screw things up. well, what do you think?

I'm a little confused on exactly what I need to upgrade my computer, since it's going on four years and I have never updated the Bios,or anything.

I just thought that if I updated the Bios, things should work easier and more efficiently......Should I not do this unless I positively HAVE TO ?

Or does this Bios upgrade make the newer devices function more properly? Thanks for all your help Thanks again!
