You can emulate a straight, generic VGA or one of the many different types of VGA cards that were out in the day like the Tseng Labs ET3000 or ET4000 GPU's, well before they were called GPU's that is to say
I installed some older dos games such as the classic Interplay RPG compilations, these were the re-released Gold Box series games from SSI/Interplay and such like Hillsfar, Pools of Radiance and the Eye of the Beholder series.
Fun to mess around with some of these titles but sometimes you can still have sound issues even if you manually setup the sound card IRQ and DMA channels.

Sound issues are usually caused by:
Cycles too low or too high.
Sound card drivers and/or crappy sound card.
Sound card chosen in game configuration.
Need to play around with: rate, blocksize, buffer amounts in dosbox.conf.

Gotcha, however, it maybe best to ask this over on Vogons as they do have a dedicated DosBox board.....
