driver insists on trying to reinstalling
Something that I haven't been able to figure out. I have a HP Deskjet 845c which works great under W2k, except that the usb driver insists on trying to reinstalling itself every time I reboot. Doesn't hurt anything, but, darn annoying, and totaly unnecessary.

Have you tried a tool like msconfig.exe OR startupcpl by Mike Lin (the better of the 2 in some ways)?
Actualy yes, I don't find anything relevent, but, thanks for the tip on startupcpl, nice utility.

(Do check that key & others around it that those 2 tools work on as well... they are many of the auto-run/start areas & exist for both ALL USERS (as in that section) plus also in the HKEY_CURRENT_USER hive as well!)
Nothing in those sections, but, HP has a bunch of sections... I've not dared be too agressive with this, but I'd bet that one of these entrys may be responsibile. I don't want to screw this up too bad.

P.S.=> Sounds almost like its installer does not or did not clean itself up after running... or cannot complete its tasks for some odd reason! apk
Exactly!!! It starts to install and then gives a message that it can't complete... someplace there's a 0 that should be a 1 or vice versa, but, which entry??? Driving me nuts :x

the Print Spooler service 'is' set to AUTOMATIC, so that can't be it ;(
It's the 'Found new hardware' message followed by 'completing Found new hardware' and 'an error occured during the instalation of this device, access denied'. Meaning, I think, that the device is already in place, but where it goes from there... I'm lost.
I just sent an email to HP support... We'll see where that goes ;(

Hehe... thanks APK. It's one of those things i figured out a few years ago that works with most usb devices, especially when the device is plugged in before the drivers are installed. It's just one of those things that you're much better off not trying to fight Windows on... just let it have it's way and move on
