I am looking to transfer some of my DVDs to VCDs. Does anyone know of a good ripping/encoding program to use to go to MPEG?.

www.vcdhelp.com

That site alone will give you the necessary links, instructions, and software to get you going.

Firstly, please note that I am in no way advocating pricay here, I do not condone that in any way, but I do like to archive my own dvd collection (call it a neurotic habbit).

Everything you want to do, using freeware applications is explained on http://www.dvdrhelp.com.

It's a great site, and it has tutorials for ripping converting, and just about anything else you might want, and links to the downloads of the software you need to do what they outline.

Edit:
Mods, you can delete my post. DS3Circuit replied with the same info as me only a minute or two befor I posted. thanks.

One last thing. If you should ever use Linux, get DVD::Rip ( http://www.exit1.org/dvdrip/). This is a simply wonderful application that can handle the entire ripping and conversion process. It is also very fast, and the defaults are good enough for the average user to just point and click, while there are more than enough options to tailor it for the advanced user.

www.doom9.org , the greatest resource ont he net for ripping and encoding dvd's, with www.vcdhelp.com a close second.

Chekc out the program DVD2SVCD too you may enjoy making SVCD instead.

Check out "Gordion knot" if you are interested in encoding to mpeg 4/Divx/ XVID.

At the moment, Mandrake 9.0 is installed and that's it. I have many drivers to download including those for my DVD drive. I will remember that when/if I finally get it up and running to its fullest potential.

DVDXCopy one click pratically - but it is one that actually works!!!! - have used it a few times!

i would say www.vcdhelp.com - it provides all of the links to software and does not provide pirated software - it tells you whether freeware or shareware
