error checking problem..in XP

i was having problems loading my E drive. . . . so i decided to do an error check. i clicked 'fix the problems automatically' and the 'restore all sectors', it then told me i had to restart my computer to scan the disk.

i was having problems loading my E drive....so i decided to do an error check. i clicked 'fix the problems automatically' and the 'restore all sectors', it then told me i had to restart my computer to scan the disk...so i did and it started to scan, and then it got to:
 
CHKDSK is verifying file data (stage 4 of 5)
0 percent complete
 
and it wont move from there....my computer wont turn off, and i am forced to turn off the surge protector.
 
I have had this running for about an hour and it still said 0 percent...
 
can somebody please help.
