Final Fantasy 7 (Specific Problem)
I managed to get the game to work following the instructions from what several people said but I have a problem. When you goto the chocobo races the game locks up then crashes back to windows 2000. I have Service Pack 2, App Compat Update, and then the App Compat 1.

I have Service Pack 2, App Compat Update, and then the App Compat 1.5 installed already, and i used the QFixApp to get the game to run. Is there a way to keep the chocobo racing from crashing? If so, someone let me know.
Just in case it matters, im using a Voodoo 3 2000 as my video card.

Heyo AMDFreak,
Just one question for you:
If the chocobo races crash on you (as you said they sometimes do), do you have to reboot your computer and try again, or can you just start up FFVII immediately again, and take another shot at it?
I finally took some time aside to try out your method on my parents' computer (I would have used mine, but unfortunately, I'm still running 2000 -- haven't had the time to install XP on mine yet). Although all the other mini-games seem to work perfectly, the chocobo races still crashed as soon as I entered them (the music kept running, but there was no image, and the program died the moment I pressed Enter or Esc).
And, another note that may be of use to some people: You may have to install the movie player from the FFVII install menu in order to view the movies
(That is, if you didn't install DirectShow during the installation process).
Thankies!

Recently the Chocobo Races no longer work, im trying to find what caused them to work and isolate some way of developing a fix. When it does crash I just need to restart the game and all is go. For the time being, I play all my Chocobo races on my little brothers AMD K6-2 with Voodoo3
I'll let you know as and when I come up with anything

Thanks for your response AMDFreak
Hmm, this is very odd. I wish we could isolate a fix somehow. Oh well, thank you for your attempts. Maybe it'll come to one of us someday
Well, anyhow, I'm gonna move up to WinXP in about a week here, and I'm gonna grab PartitionMagic while I'm at it and make a small 98SE dual boot, since I can't think of any better way to make this work.
Then I'll install FF7 under both OSes to the exact same directory (ie. FF7\ on my Win98 drive), and then I can run the game from both OSes (with only one copy of it installed). So I'll be able to play mostly from WinXP, and then whenever I need to race on big bird, I'll just switch on over to 98 for the race. Not the most elegant solution, but I'm sort'a stuck here, hehe.

I just formatted and put in Win 98 SE. Does everything I need anyways. Screw 2000/XP.
And the support just keeps on a comin'...

Suitably ironic that they cannot even spell chocobo

Well, I was messing around trying to get FF7 to run under XP today. The game works pretty well on my system and mind you this is without using the ACT. The 3D is nice and smooth, but the 2D backgrounds are all corrupted and messed up. Anyone else encounter this?
(FF7 w/TNT patch (but not in nvidia mode) with the Detonator 27.20 drivers on GeForce2 MX).

Heyo,
Though I've never experienced this myself, I've heard something to the effect that FF7 and the Ge2 don't get along after a certain detonator driver (21.81, or 12.41? I don't really remember).
I'd look up the information, but unfortunately, I have to run...

Read through the many posts regarding GeFs and FF7. Most have to deal with people not being able to get Hardware Accel to work for them (which I thought DirectX 8.1 solved practically single-handedly <shrug>), but I remember seeing some other stuff as well.
Good luck

I've played FFVIII on WINXP with no problems at all. (I just had to update my videocard drivers. So no problem there.
But here are TWO problems I'm facing with FF VII.
1: I msut use software render. I have an old ATI 128 someting card whitch was not originally created to support 8-bit palette textures. i read how to fix this on an official ATI page and it almost works. i pass all tests and can select hardware acceleration BUT everything but charaters are GREEN! So I can't play it that way. if anyonw has a suggestion/made this work please notify me by mail ( espenoe@online.no)
2: The game chrased at chocobo races. (no suprise) I got the patch and now that section works perfectly. The NEW problem is the submarine mission! When it's SUPPOSED to change the screen to the underwater view the game hangs the computer Does anyone have a solution to this? Am I alone having this problem???

Imperceptus - Check this thread for a solution that others have used for the chocobo races...
I have no problem with the chocobo races! Read the entire post!
Oh. two more things: the screen isn't GREEN when I use hardware acceleration, it's blue
And; I fixed the submarine problem on my own right after my post
The software renderer could for some reason NOT handle the submarine scenario, so I switched to hardware rendering (all background became blue and unusable) but I found my way to the sub-mission and now it worked/look great!
Of course I had to change it back after the mission

No problem. It's the thought that counts
I guess so. But you _WILL_ need the unofficial chocobo patch, no doubt about it. And in my case I had to juggle the settings on my 3D-card to get the submarine thing working, but if yo have a card that supposrts 8-bit palette textures that should not be a problem.
I got to play the entire game on my computer with an early build of XP, so I don't see why not.
