ATI´s last major graphics chip, the Radeon, made a strong entrance to the graphics marketplace. It was a strong chipset for its time whose 32-bit frame rates were in league with the NVIDIA´s powerful GeForce2 GTS. Its features, most notably its HyperZ memory architecture, were well-received (they, too, were announced before the chipset itself was).
Since its release, however, chief competitor NVIDIA has gone on to release the GeForce2 Ultra and the GeForce3, neither of which the top-of-the-line Radeon 64MB DDR can hold a polygonal candle to. From a gamer´s perspective, ATI is once again in a weakened position and due for a comeback. Will the SmartShader be the key to another phoenixlike reemergence?
