I've figued out that when SP2 or SP1 installs, they install a new PCI driver of some sort, this driver would make my system (and some others) boot into a blue screen saying INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE (something like that)anyways the fix:
Copy: atapi.sys (all found in the winnt/system32/drivers directory)
pciide.sys
pciidex.sys
to a directory (eg:C:\Fix)
Install SP2 as normal, before restarting the system to complete the installation, copy thoes 3 files back to winnt/system32/drivers directory and restart the system as normal..
as far as i know this was a issue with a Maxtor 20 gig HD and my epox 8kta2 mobo with the via kt133/686b chipset
hope it helps!
ps. feel free to reinstall the VIA 4-1 if paranoid

Odd, as I have 2 Maxtor 20GB disks in my Intel based, and had no problems installing any of the service packs.
The only disk related problem I've had is when I wasn't much attention to the motherboard IDE drivers, and installed the wrong ones for my mobo. Oops
Still, nothing a quick re-format and re-install couldn't cure
