Whenever I install the Shockwave Flash Object and visit a page that requires flash then my IE6 crashes! Without the flash player installed if I go to a page that requires FLASH then a message comes up asking me if I want to install Flash version 7 and I can surf the net without any hangs or crashes as long as I keep pressing NO when this message comes. Of course surfing in this fashion is quite difficult. If I press YES and install version 7 then IE6 will crash everytime it goes to a page requiring FLASH.
I've tried installing older versions of Flash Player but there is no improvement. I've reinstalled IE6 and repaired it but to no avail. I've even tried following the instructions found on the following link but still it makes no difference:
http://www.macromedia.com/support/flash...htm#fixall
The only thing that DOES fix it is if I downgrade to IE5. I'd like to use IE6 though and would appreciate any help you wise ones out there can provide. Should I post the MS error report? Would that help in finding out why IE6 crashes when visiting a page requiring flash?

I have this problem and it usually requires rebooting the machine. I can uninstall Flash 7 but this is the only version that I seem to be able to get access to and there seems no way to get around the problem.
I have seen advice that installing IE 5.5 will do the job but where can I get an IE5.5 installation from?
The problem does not occur with Mozilla.
How old is this problem? Is Microsoft aware of it? Is Macromedia? How does one advise them?

if u use a torrent program like bitlord, i suggest you install ie7. go to http://thepiratebay.org/details.php?id=3394297 i did this and ie7 is great. seems to fix most problems like toolbars and on my ie6 flash objects would not play at all. ie7 seems to fix tht!
I had this same problem (flash crashes in IE6 but not IE5, Windows 98) and found a solution. I know this is an old forum thread but may be some use to someone else in the future.
The fix is the activex compatibility registry key for the flash component. I deleted it and everything started working.
The following is from a .reg file that will fix it, or you can delete the key manually and hopefully it will work for you.
(save what is between the lines and import it)
-----------------------------------------------------
REGEDIT4
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\ActiveX Compatibility\{D27CDB6E-AE6D-11CF-96B8-444553540000}]
