Gator (aka GAIN software) are the lamers of the internet

I just want users to know and be aware of this awfull program which is created by lamers that should not have anything to do with the internet. Gator installs itself without asking in many apps and progs, even games, and all it does is bring up pop-ups while you're surfing.

They call it adware. All they could do is ask you if you actually want it to be installed on your computer.

I call it spyware, since all it does is monitor your surfing on the internet and then pops up with "appropriate" for your needs ads. I don't want any fu**er knowing what the hell i do when i surf (pardon my language but i'm really mad right now).

I say that the magic of the internet is that it's free(freenet), anyone can express their opinions(free speech). Take these two simple things out the internet is going to become a bag of $hite.

I feel the same way: It's my computer, and I will have the final say as to exactly what will go on it. I don't mind stuff coming up to ask if I want it on my machine, but I do mind when/if something automatically installs without my say so. Pop-up ads are annoying, but auto-install software is even worse.

There are lots of progs that install GAIN. Most of them they ask you first. Some don't and just go ahead and install it.I don't want to name the particular program that pissed me off here as it will be considered spamming from the guys that made it. I respect their work but not their management that's all. I already flamed them enough in their forum, so it's better to end it here.

It's not only the case of being installed on its own, but the whole concept of internet privacy. Free speech is bliss for crying out loud!

I found out yesterday that this lame program also dials to the internet by itself (states phone number). It's my pleasure to saw everyone here and anywhere i can post to, the solution to rip off this prog from your computer for good. This article is written by Doom9 (found it in his website).

After the installation run msconfig, go to the startup options and deactivate
gain_trickler_xxxx or CMEsys, then reboot. If you have no msconfig on your machine then
run regedit and remove the following keys:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\gator.com\
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows\curr
entversion\stashedgef
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows\curr
entversion\stashedgmg
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows\curr
entversion\run\trickler

Then reboot. Now you can also delete c:\program files\DivX\DivX Pro Codec\gain_trickler_3102.exe

That concludes the removal.

The following registry key must exist or you can no longer use the codec:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\clsid\{21ffb6c0-0da1-11d5-a9d5-00500413153c}\

It's unbelievable how bold these guys are. I think they crossed every line. It's completely unacceptable a program calling by itself without asking and this program being supported by quite a lot of apps.

now i remember!

zone alarm was complaining about a gain_trickler app trying to access the net....just because of the name i said no and then i read this thread. I recall that it was right after I installed the DivX Pro 5 codec, most of you saw it on the news last week.

So, anyone that got the the particular codec AND despises spyware on their machine congratulate Thymios for his efforts. Thanks man!

The instructions for removal of GAIN software applies to all programs that install it, not only DivX 5. Now you all know the name of the program that pissed me off last week. I am very dissapointed by the release of DivX 5 since i am a DivX fan, and i encode a lot. Gej who made the original codec (3.11) is approached now by MS and other large companies, to officially make DivX codec the most popular codec for video on demand, so i guess it was only a matter of time to get corrupted by it and start looking to get money on the side.

I encore the good programming and hard work, but not the rip off.

Thats the problem with open source. You give stuff away for free how you support yourself?

True. But what we are talking about in here is a codec not a program, and the codec is in fact a hacked version of MS's ASF. Now you'll ask me why MS didn't make another codec supporting the features and quality of DivX? The answer is simple. DivX had lots of law related problems with movie associations. It's still considered illegal, because it can produce almost perfect copies of DVD's.Companies loose a lot of money and they try to hit DivX, but they arrive too late, since DivX is already the most popular codec on the net and people are learning to use it and encode, very fast.

Now here comes the tricky part. MS and the other companies prefered to support a ready made (and definattelly succesful) codec. They obviously have to do it within law limits. So what they brought up? Digital Rights Management. The new feature of Divx Pro, which will enable movie companies to produce copy-proof DivX's. The story goes on and on, and i will have to write for about half an hour to say everything. Look aroung the internet on DivX related sites and you'll see what's going on.

One thing is for sure. Free is DEAD.
