this happens with the new Cirrus logic chipset found on the Philips Acoustic Edge, Herc GTXP, and Santa Cruz. The only fix i have found besides blind luck is to start a directsound app up (i use tribes 2 so far i havent found anything besides games that work to get the sound working right) and exit the game. When you get back to the desktop your sound should work. This is the only workaround/fix until XP drivers come out.

try moving back to 256 megs of RAM ive heard this fixes the issue with some people too. All i know is that my fix works because everyone ive told to do it has had luck with it working.
