I have a Win2000 server with an Asus board (P3B-f with latest bios and ACPI and wake on Lan enabled) and just tried out standby last night. It worked fine, but in order to get back in the computer I had to press the power button once, then enter the password for the last user logged on the system. Moving the mouse, hitting enter, spacebar, esc and all the other "normal" re-activation keys didn't help.
I just activated hibernation on the thing and will report back shortly on how that worked.
I've wanted to try out hibernation and this is a good excuse to do that

Hibernation also works very well I turned around after the last post and the little devil was out cold.
Press the power button, system posts, starts loading the OS, you get a message about the system being locked, press ctrl-alt-del, type in the user password and you're right back in the desktop.
Total boot time for the system was less than 30 seconds.
I think I'll use hibernation on a regular basis

All components have to support ACPI/hibernation to use it.
I remember that my SB Live had problems with hibernation when Win2000 was still beta.
It would go to sleep and wake up but with an annoying buzzing sound that wouldn't go away.
As usual make sure that all drivers are the latest available ... do you have any hardware that is not 100% Win2000 compatible by any chance?

hmm..Besides the Hardware metioned above I have a Hauppauge WinTV, a Soudblaster Live, and an AVM ISDN Fritzcard. Don't know if any of them is not ASPI compatible, how can I find out ?
What exactly are your settings in the BIOS - power management ?
( Meanwhile my PC wouldn't turn off at all but found out it was Direct CD that sucked )

hehe, wasn't on this board for a few days
Easiest way to see if your peripherals are the troublemakers would be to remove them. I know that the SB Live and Geforce are hibernating (have them running on my P2B-LS) so I would suggest to pull the WinTV and ISDN card. If your system hibernates try to add one card at a time to see if it is only one or maybe even both.

I've never gotten suspend or hibernate to work for me, ever. Not win95, not win98, not win2k. Haven't tried NT 4 yet....but I have a feeling I know what's going to happen. I just turn the damn things off. I never use any "power saving" features, as they get me disconnected from the network, they make programs/the system crash. I'll just turn my monitor off and lock the machine when I'm gone.
Ok if this is ok to you. I sleep in the room where my PC is and have to turn it off because of its noises and it's a waste of power letting it turned on 24 hours a day. I don't care which one but hibernate or standby, one of them or better both somehow have to work.
Anyone has a link to ASUS news server ? Could find it on their page.

Hibernate is not really a PowerSave state. It is simply a shutdown state saving memory status so when it boots it just replaces that memory state (Which is why it is so quick) that is why none of the other re-activation keys work. (Unless they are to power on - Keyboard etc). I have a KT7-Raid and hibernate works fine BTW

you misunderstood me, I know exactly what hibernate and standby means. But they don't work. Standby shows nothing but a flashing "-" in the top left of my screen when I reactivate the PC and hibernate shuts down but freezes when I turn on the PC and it should continue from hibernate mode. Then I press reset the only choice I have and select delete hibernate file and boot as normal.
