How to turn off a starup item?
This is a discussion about How to turn off a starup item? in the Customization Tweaking category; Using 9x for so long, I'm not sure how to remove this program. When I start my computer, some app that runs but isn't in the StartUp folder immediately crashes and is closed. . Figures. I'm used to running MSCONFIG to turn these things off.

I'm used to running MSCONFIG to turn these things off... Not so in W2K. Help the newbie... How do I remove this?

Have a look in the Registry under...
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
Everything that loads at startup is listed there. Just delete the entry that relates to the offending application.

yeah check either HKLM or HKCU (Hkey current user) and under the software/MS/windows/run and runonce are the keys you are looking for.
If you don't want to get your hands dirty, check out Reg Cleaner.
Very handy at backing up and removing startup items.
Check out www.utilitygeek.com. I believe that they have it there.

Startup Control Panel ( http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml) is a nice interface to the registry Run keys.
