Microsoft offers download of Home or Professional Setup Disks.
The floppy boot install will create 6 boot diskettes for Windows XP.

The real question is: why did you give your Windows XP CD to your friend?
err how about the quick and simple way?
Right click floppy, select format, check off create msdos startup disk.
Format disk, use it to boot with.

Unless you've formatted your hard drive as NTFS. The system disk created using the steps Seldzar explained is a Windows ME startup disk. Thus, it can't read NTFS.
