icons stuck at 16 color?!?!?! HELP!!!
This is a discussion about icons stuck at 16 color?!?!?! HELP!!! in the Windows Software category; ok i have tried everything. my icons seem to be stuck at 16 color mode no matter what i do. it must be something in the registry, because everything i've tried has not worked. i know other people have this problem.

Pentium II 400 MHz
160MB PC100 RAM
3dfx Voodoo 3 3000 - set at 1024x786 @ 32 bit
this problem just came out of nowhere. and YES, the full color icon box is checked off. i will try absolutely anything to fix it, but i won't reinstall windows. if anybody knows reg. entries please tell me. thanks!

guess i baffled the world on this one
Check out the following key...
If it's not there, create the key.
Key: [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\WindowMetrics]
Value Name: Shell Icon BPP
Data Type: REG_SZ (String Value)
Data: 32
If Data is set to 16, 16 colors will be used.

I have same problem!
It's came out after installing MSN Messenger.
Not only icons - cursors too. They are animated, but 16 colors only (not 16K).
The key in upper message do nothing in this case
And if Data is set to 16, 16K colors will be used.
Icons on desktop, task bar, tray, explorer - all of them in 16 color mode only! And for tray icon not redraw - takes the nearest 16's color icon from source DLL or EXE.
What and where to change
