IE6 security/encryption problem; Secure web pages no worky

I'm trying to fix a WinXP pc that cannot open any secure web pages. When I attempt to do so, I get the page not found error. I was told that encryption/security has failed in IE6, & needs to be corrected.

When I try to reinstall IE6 from Microsoft, I just get errors saying "installation could not complete. please close all programs & try again...bla bla".

IE is currently identifying itself as;

version 6.0.2800.1106.xpsp1.020828-1920
cipher strength 128 bit
update Version SP1

Can anyone throw me a bone here?

For the hell of it, I tried try to install IE patches from Microsofts site. But, I am unable to because an error pops up saying "This update requires IE6 to be installed".

Damn, this is so frustrating
