OP
after 1-2 hours of editing config.sys and autoexec.bat i've managed to free up enough memory. Only problem now is when i try to run privateer i get some fatal error:

'Memory: Original Current Used
'Near 29582 29052 530
'Far 370380 335036 35344
'High 7224064 7198032 26032

Fatal error.

Error Code: D002-FFFF
Program Halted by code.
JEMM unloaded

Seems like i'm not meeting the requirements for "far" memory whatever the heck that is. Anyone know how to fix this? To free up memory i removed my cd-rom from config.sys and autoexec.bat

I know this post is ancient.. but it comes up on the first page of a google search for this problem, so here's the solution.

This error message indicates that there is a problem with your sound card configuration. Run the INSTALL program again and select NO sound and NO music. Run the game again and see if you can get past the error message. If you can get past the error message with Sound and Music turned OFF, then you will need to run the install program again to set your sound up a second time. Be sure to know the proper address, IRQ and DMA values for your sound card before you install the game again. Incorrect IRQ values can cause this error message as well.
