Well, I just went out and purchased a new Abit KT7a, 1 gig tbird, and a case. First thing I did was install win98 for the first partition, and win2k Pro on the second partition to allow for dual booting. I have also overclocked the CPU to 8.5x133 to 1133 mhz. Things are very stable at this speed for the most part. But I am running into a few errors that I cant seem to figure out at all. I am using the drivers that came on the CD, which are based off the 4.26 series Via 4in1 motherboard drivers. Here the problems, and if you know how to get around them, let me know.

1) I am assuming that there is no hope for us Aureal Vortex2 users. I have searched high and low in all of the vortex based forums for a solution. But I dont think one exists yet until MS or Via creates a fix to support a dead company.

2) Windows 2k will not shut down. I click to shut it down, it looks like everything is closing out, then it gets to where there is nothing but the default blue background showing. Then it hangs forever. I have tried two reinstalls to fix this, and nothing seems to work just yet. Thinking it might be from the overclocking of my CPU, I put it back to defaults. Still no go. I can set two ACPI modes on the BIOS. One is the S1 (pos), and the other is S3(STR). Tried both of these. Still no go. What setting am I missing, or... heck, I dont know? Any ideas anyone. I hate having to use the power button to force a shutdown of the PC down.

3)Coming from a 440BX based board, everything seemed to run faster in Win2k than win98, especially openGL 3dgames like quake3. My old scores with a celeron 850 and an Abit BH6 were around 98 FPS in win2k and 92 or so in win98. With my new PC at 1133, I am stuck at 88FPS in win2k and 117 fps in win98. What gives?? Win98 is fine, but win2k scores are very low. AGP is shown working in 4x mode when I use WPUID. This is using the Det3 6.18 drivers.

4)Last but not least, .avi files are very choppy with the new configuration. They seem to pause for a quick split second ever two seconds or so.

Things worked great with the abit bh6/celeron 850 combo, which led me to favor win2k over win98. But with the problems now that I have now that I dont get in win98, it makes me wonder if I should even use win2k since it just gives me problems, especially the shutdown errors which force me use use chkdsk with each bootup. Please help me to once again enjoy Win2k!

Well have you gotten the newest 4in1 drivers and the AMD/VIA fix from MS? Also as for FPS performance have you downloaded the nv refresh rate fix for 2k? Also use newer drivers than the 6.18 drivers sheesh those are almost 6-8 months old. Other than those recommendations i don't know what to tell ya.

More to this saga

I finally downloaded Win2k service pack one and the AMD4in1 drivers. And this took care of most of everything. I can now reach 107 FPS with the same settings, so that is a start. But I still get choppy MPEG performance. And still no vortex2 sound, but I think I will be forced to live with that until MS attempts to fix it.
