Laptop fan stopped!!

I have a problem. Someone gave me a Compaq Armada 1590 DMT. I've been using it for a few days, but just realised that the fan isnt spinning (the one at the back). The laptop gets very hot under so im guessing this fan is supposed to be working. Now, is this a common hardware failure? Or is it just somekind of bios setting that will get this fan going. Im not familure with laptops so any help on getting this fan to spin would be appreciated!

Either its dead or it only comes on when needed, my dads Latitude L400 runs fine for a bit then suddenly the fan will come on for a bit and then stop again. Just a shame it sounds like a jet engine.

Probably dead though if it never ever comes on
